Maya Angelou once said, “People will forget what you said, people will forget what you did, but people will never forget how you made them feel.” I’ve been thinking about this quote for years. It’s a simple idea, but it’s true.
In our work, we spend a lot of time trying to say the right things or do impressive stuff. But in the end, what really matters is how we make people feel.
Think about the people who’ve had the biggest impact on you – your favorite boss, a helpful colleague, a mentor. You probably don’t remember the exact words they used. But you remember how they made you feel. Supported. Inspired. Like you mattered.
It works the other way too. The clients you went above and beyond for, the coworkers you really listened to, the people on your team whose work you appreciated out loud – they may not remember the details of what you said, but they’ll remember how you made them feel.
Angelou was reminding us to put empathy first. To be kind. To treat people with respect. When we do that, we build strong relationships and trust that lasts.
This is extra important now that so much of how we communicate happens online. It’s easy to forget that behind every email or chat message is a real person with feelings. Someone who wants to be seen and heard.
So as you go through your day, pay attention to how what you say and do makes people feel. Make them feel valued. Supported. Appreciated. That’s the stuff people remember. That’s how you leave a mark.
